What decides the price
- Soil. The single biggest variable. Well-draining soil supports a simple gravity field; slow-draining or shallow soil forces a larger field or an engineered system.
- Bedrooms. Systems are sized by bedroom count.
- Lot access and terrain. Flat and open is cheap; wooded hillside means slower machine work and sometimes a pump chamber.
- Permit and inspections. County fees are modest; the contractor's design and inspection coordination are part of the quote.

New construction in Suffolk County has required an I/A system since 2021, and grant funding cannot be used for it — the county and state programs are for replacing an existing cesspool or septic system at an existing home, and new construction on a vacant lot is excluded outright. For a replacement the sequence is set by the county and it is worth knowing in advance: you contract a design professional at your own expense, they submit the permit application to the Office of Wastewater Management, the permit to construct is issued, you take a price quote from an installer on the County Approved Installer List based on the approved site plans, and the county issues a grant eligibility memo against that quote.
